Lesbians and bisexual women were found to have more health problems than straight women, a new study suggests.
A research conducted by WA Centre for Health Promotion Research made a comparative analysis of the identity, the use of drugs, diet, nutrition , safe sex practices, physical activity, and health services assessment for lesbian, bisexual women and straight women.
The results showed that alcohol and drug use was twice as higher for lesbians and bisexual women than for heterosexual women. The frequency and the amount of alcohol was higher due to the fact that many women of this group socialize in a different environment, often meeting in pubs and clubs.
As much as 30 percent of all lesbian and bisexual women suffered from depression and 20 percent claiming about other mental problems. Also 20 percent of homosexual women were overweight.
Ms Comfort, one of the researchers said that homophobia and issues of self-esteem should be taken into account too. Many health services have no appropriate services to respond to health issues when it comes to sexual minorities. This issues should be addressed by programs that deal with healthy lifestyle improvement.
